Jeremy Clarkson, the former Top Gear presenter and operator of the 1,000-acre Diddly Squat farm in Chadlington, recently recounted a dramatic and joyful experience assisting in the birth of a calf on his farm. Writing in The Sunday Times on Saturday, April 26, Clarkson described being called into action when one of his cows encountered complications during labour.
Clarkson detailed how the calf became stuck for 90 minutes, leading to a strenuous 'tug-of-war' to help the animal safely enter the world. “I rushed over to it, scraping the gunk from its face before putting a bit of straw up its nose to make it sneeze and start breathing. And it did. And I simply cannot tell you how that feels,” he wrote, conveying the profound impact of the moment.
Despite being alone and initially nervous, Clarkson revealed the exhaustion and physical strain he endured, saying, "I was exhausted, my arms felt as though they were on fire, I was covered in slimy cow juice and faeces and I was smiling a smile that I simply didn’t think would be possible in any kind of workplace.” He went on to describe the calf as “the most adorable you've ever seen,” expressing uncertainty about what might have happened had he not intervened.
Following this event, Clarkson was alerted to another cow in labour via his ‘moo call’ alarm system and successfully delivered a second healthy calf. He described this second delivery as welcoming “another beautiful, wobbly-legged, blue-eyed bundle of perfection.” Reflecting on the significance of these moments, he said, “I’ve had some happy moments in farming but nothing gets even remotely close to this. All I want to do from now on is to be a midwife. For cows.”
Earlier in March, Clarkson shared a photograph on his Instagram account showing a cow and its newborn calf, noting it was their first calf of 2025. He later posted a second photograph, confirming his direct involvement in assisting with the birth.
