The British Museum in London has recovered 268 more items that were previously reported missing or stolen, bringing the total number of retrieved artefacts to 626 out of an estimated 1,500. These recovered pieces include classical Greek and Roman gems and jewellery. The recovered items were found in various locations across Europe and North America.
George Osborne, Chairman of the British Museum trustees, praised the efforts of the team and the network of supporters who have contributed to these successful recoveries.
Despite the progress, around 500 artefacts remain damaged, including 350 with gold removed and about 140 harmed by tools.
The British Museum's director at the time of the thefts, Hartwig Fischer, resigned in August 2023 and was temporarily replaced by Sir Mark Jones. Nicholas Cullinan, previously director of the National Portrait Gallery, has been appointed as the permanent director.
Legal proceedings have started against former curator Dr. Peter Higgs, who was dismissed in July 2022. Dr. Higgs has been investigated by the Metropolitan Police but has not been charged.
Recovered items are currently on display at the British Museum in an exhibition titled "Rediscovering Gems," open until June 15.
