A recent study conducted by researchers from the University of Zurich has revealed that artificial intelligence (AI) bots can be significantly more persuasive than humans in online discussions, particularly on divisive topics. The research, reported by 404 Media and highlighted by Social Media Today, involved deploying AI bot profiles on Reddit within the subreddit r/changemyview, a forum dedicated to debating contentious issues.
Over several months, these AI bots made more than a thousand comments. In their interactions, some bots assumed highly specific and sensitive personas, including a ‘rape victim’, a ‘Black man’ opposing the Black Lives Matter movement, an individual working at a domestic violence shelter, and a person advocating against the rehabilitation of certain criminals. The bots further personalised their responses by analysing discussion starters' posting histories to estimate their gender, age, ethnicity, location, and political orientation, using large language models such as GPT-4o, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and Llama 3.1.
The outcome was striking: the AI bots achieved persuasive success rates between three and six times higher than those of human participants. This finding suggests that AI can not only participate in online discourse but also effectively influence opinions, surpassing human capabilities in some contexts.
The use of these bots without informing Reddit users raised ethical concerns, as participants engaged with the AI assuming they were interacting with real people. The researchers pointed out the potential for state-backed groups or others to deploy similar AI-driven tactics on a large scale to sway public opinion on social media platforms.
The implications of such findings come at a time when major social media companies like Meta are reported to plan widespread integration of AI bots across platforms including Facebook and Instagram. These AI profiles would mimic human engagement and communication styles, potentially transforming the nature of online social interaction. This shift prompts broader questions about the identity and purpose of social media if much of the interaction is AI-generated rather than human.
Beyond persuasion in debates, the study touches on deeper ethical and social issues surrounding AI bots. Within Meta, internal staff have reportedly voiced concerns over the ethical boundaries crossed in the development of AI personas, including enabling them with capacities for fantasy sexual conversations. Some staff members warned about insufficient protections for underage users exposed to such content, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.
The possible encouragement of romantic or intimate relationships with AI profiles—entities that are not human but are designed to appear and interact as if they were—raises further mental health and societal questions. There has not yet been comprehensive research into the psychological impact of such relationships, leaving uncertainties about their long-term consequences.
This rapid advancement and deployment of AI technologies draw parallels with the early days of social media platforms, which only years later revealed significant societal and individual impacts that prompted calls for regulatory oversight. Experts predict similar debates and legislative efforts will emerge concerning AI bots in the coming years.
