In a significant initiative aimed at empowering young women, the Nigeria Women in Information Technology (NIWIIT), Oyo State Chapter, recently hosted an event that brought together over 250 female students from ten secondary schools across the state. This gathering celebrated the 2025 International Girls in ICT Day on April 24, a date dedicated to promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities for girls in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector.

International Girls in ICT Day, observed annually on the fourth Thursday of April, was established by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to raise awareness about the imperative for more female participation in ICT fields. The theme for 2025, “Girls in ICT for inclusive digital transformation,” underscores the importance of integrating women and girls into the digital landscape. This year's event sought to inspire a new generation to pursue careers in technology, emphasising socio-economic advancement through ICT education.

The event featured a diverse programme that focused on fostering gender equality and stimulating intergenerational dialogue among participants. The agenda encouraged collaboration between governments, the private sector, and civil society to create a more inclusive digital environment. NIWIIT Oyo State Coordinator, Madam Samotu Adejoke, led the initiative, supported by an experienced planning committee, including figures such as Cecilia Adenusi and several esteemed educators and professionals.

Participating schools included Bishop Philips Academy, Bashorun High School, and Tobi International School, among others. The event had multiple highlights, including the graduation ceremony of 130 students from the NIWIIT AI Girls Club, where certificates were awarded, fostering a sense of accomplishment and community among young female tech enthusiasts.

Dignitaries present included the Commissioner for Information, who acted as the Father of the Day, and numerous influential figures from the ICT sector, emphasising the event's cultural significance. A dynamic panel discussion showcased insights from notable tech leaders, who shared advice on navigating ICT careers in an increasingly digital world. This interaction provided a vital platform for mentorship and guidance, essential components for encouraging female participation in a male-dominated sector.

Innovative student projects were displayed, with highlights including Diagnobot, an AI-based infectious disease detection system, which received recognition as the best project following rigorous evaluation by expert judges. The judges, comprised of respected professionals in the technology sector, also evaluated other projects aimed at addressing contemporary issues such as cyberbullying and health monitoring.

Tech workshops further enriched the experience, offering hands-on learning opportunities. One notable session on UI/UX design engaged students in practical application, demonstrating the real-world relevance of their studies.

The NIWIIT Oyo chapter expressed profound gratitude to their partners, including Galaxy Backbone and the Nigeria Computer Society, who contributed to the event's success. These collaborations are critical, as they not only enhance the educational experience but also strengthen networks that can lead to future career opportunities for participants.

As the world pivots to embrace digitalisation, it is imperative to ensure that women and girls are not left behind. Initiatives like those undertaken by NIWIIT play a crucial role in shifting societal perspectives, combating stereotypes, and fostering a more equitable landscape in technology. With the ongoing commitment to these ideals, the aspirations shared during the event are likely to resonate well beyond April 2025, potentially inspiring young women to lead and innovate in the ICT sector.
