Sophie Browne, a 21-year-old mother of two from Newton Abbot, Devon, died after being struck by a car on the A38 Devon Expressway near Chudleigh Knighton on the night of May 25. The incident occurred just before 11 PM on the section of the road between Drumbridges Roundabout and Chudleigh Knighton, approximately 10 miles southwest of Exeter. Despite the efforts of emergency services, Sophie was pronounced dead at the scene.
Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that Sophie was a pedestrian at the time of the accident and have launched an investigation, appealing to the public for any information or dashcam footage related to the incident.
Sophie's family expressed their devastation, highlighting her ongoing struggles with mental health, which they believe led to her presence on the road that night. Her sister Chloe Browne has set up a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses and to provide financial support for Sophie's young children, Rex and Reggie. The campaign has raised over £1,300 towards a £1,500 goal.
Chloe described Sophie as someone who significantly impacted the lives of her friends and family, acknowledging the support and love received during this difficult time. The police investigation caused the A38 to be closed in both directions for more than 12 hours. The authorities continue to seek any additional information to assist in their inquiries.
