Japanese State Banquet at Buckingham Palace
On June 25, 2024, Buckingham Palace hosted a state banquet in honor of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan. This event marked their three-day official visit to the UK, coinciding with the lead-up to a General Election. Key figures at the event included Sir Clive Alderton, principal private secretary to the King and Queen, and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, who is anticipated to be the next Prime Minister based on current polling.
The banquet aimed to reinforce the strong diplomatic relations between the UK and Japan. In his speech, King Charles III emphasized shared values of freedom, democracy, and the rule of law. He also reflected on his personal connections with Japan, mentioning shared interests with Emperor Naruhito, such as mountain climbing, opera, and fly fishing. King Charles highlighted collaborative efforts in science and technology to tackle global challenges, particularly climate change.
Notable attendees included Rishi Sunak, senior cabinet members, YouTuber Chris Broad, and several royal family members. The Queen showcased the King’s new Family Order for the first time, while guests enjoyed a menu featuring poached Scottish langoustines, Cornish turbot, and an ice-cream bomb with peach sorbet. The evening concluded with a unique yuzu marmalade sour cocktail.
Conspicuously absent was Princess Anne, who is recovering from minor head injuries. The Princess of Wales, Kate, also missed the event due to her ongoing cancer treatment.
