Chris Gibbs, a lifelong farmer from Maplewood, Ohio, has recently taken on the role of chairman for the Democratic Party in Shelby County, a significantly Republican-dominated area. This transition marks a notable shift given that Gibbs, now 65, had been a prominent figure within the Republican Party locally, serving as its chairman. His shift in allegiance is framed around his belief that the Democratic Party allows for more diverse voices, contrasting with what he perceives as the stringent loyalty demanded by the contemporary Republican Party, particularly towards Donald Trump.
Gibbs' change was propelled by several political and personal experiences that began around 2014 when he noted a shift in the Republican stance on immigration. His support for Trump in the 2016 election turned to disillusionment following the administration’s policies, including the trade wars that negatively impacted his farming business. This criticism led to significant personal and professional fallout, costing him friendships and his position on the board of elections.
By the 2020 elections, Gibbs, feeling politically homeless, ran for Congress as an independent. This experience was enriching as it compelled him to deeply consider and articulate his political beliefs for the first time. His involvement in Tim Ryan's Senate campaign in 2022, although unsuccessful, cemented his alignment with the Democratic values of freedom, faith, and family, leading to his current role following Tom Kerrigan’s retirement from the position.
Now, as a Democrat, Gibbs aims to redefine and strengthen the party's presence in rural Ohio by emphasizing individual freedoms and community values, countering the image the area’s dominant Republican narrative crafts about Democrats. He's also initiated community-focused projects like a 'citizen of the month' to highlight the decency and diversity among local Democrats. Gibbs' approach is to make the Democratic Party relevant and appealing in rural settings traditionally viewed as conservative strongholds, planning events and discussions that align closely with local values and concerns.
