A balcony collapse at Medusa Beach Club in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, has killed four people and injured several others. The incident occurred on May 23, 2024, during an evening event that saw 21 people, including 12 Dutch tourists, gathered on the first-floor terrace. The victims include two German women, aged 20 and 30, a 33-year-old Spanish woman, and a 44-year-old man from Senegal, who worked at the venue.
Local authorities have revealed that the building did not have the necessary permits for activities on its terrace. Palma de Mallorca Mayor Jaime Martínez indicated that the collapse was likely caused by the excessive weight of people combined with substandard construction work.
Fire department spokesperson Eder García confirmed that the terrace's unintended use exceeded its load capacity, leading to the tragic accident. The terrace's collapse also damaged the floors below, including a disco area in the basement. Officials have commenced investigations and shared reports with the police and prosecutor's office, with the city council poised to participate in any ensuing legal actions.
