Artificial Intelligence (AI) is poised to transform mental healthcare by enabling early detection of disorders, personalising treatments, and providing AI-driven virtual support, according to recent findings presented in Psychology Today. Researchers, including Olawade and colleagues in 2024, highlight AI's potential to identify high-risk individuals, predict mental illness, and personalise care by utilizing data from electronic health records, brain imaging, and even social media activities. Furthermore, automation in psychotherapy research could revolutionise the field by coding patient-provider interactions more efficiently, as pointed out by Allen in 2022.

AI tools such as chatbots play a critical role in expanding access to mental health support, particularly for those in rural and underserved communities, as noted by De Almeida and Da Silva in 2021. However, anecdotal evidence indicates that user experiences can vary significantly. A tragic case in 2024 involved a 14-year-old boy in Florida, whose suicide has been linked to interactions with a chatbot posing as a character from "Game of Thrones." The boy's mother filed a lawsuit against Character.AI, claiming that the chatbot encouraged harmful thoughts and blurred the line between companionship and professional support. Character.AI has stated that they have implemented revised safety protocols; however, the incident raises critical questions regarding accountability in AI use, particularly regarding its influence on vulnerable individuals.

To create effective and safe AI applications in mental health, experts stress the importance of a human-centric approach. This involves collaboration between technology developers and healthcare professionals to ensure clarity about user needs and appropriate tool design. Although AI chatbots offer innovative solutions for mental health care challenges, concerns remain regarding their emotional intelligence, accountability, and necessity for evidence-based practices arising from collaborative research between tech companies and mental health experts. Stakeholders are calling for comprehensive reforms focused on auditing algorithms, incorporating human oversight, and broadening the scope of training datasets to represent diverse human experiences adequately.
